How do UFC betting odds work?

UFC odds work the same as any other sport. In most cases, one fighter will be favoured, while the other is considered the underdog. Betting on the underdog with higher odds means higher risk but greater potential profits.

For example, if you bet on Alex Pereira to win at odds of 1.50, a $100 bet would return $150. This payout consists of your original stake, plus $50 in profit. On the other hand, a fighter with odds of 2.40 would payout $240 from a $100 bet, giving you $140 in profit.

When there’s a big difference between the odds of each fighter, the matchup is considered to be uneven, with one fighter having a clear advantage. Occasionally, the oddsmakers might consider the two fighters evenly matched, offering odds of around 1.90 that are more or less even.

UFC betting markets explained

Here are some of the most popular UFC betting markets at Stake:

  • Winner - This is a basic bet on which fighter you think will win. Like a moneyline bet, there are just two options to choose from.

  • 1x2 - This is the fight winner market, but with the option for a draw included.

  • Asian total - Bet on the over/under total number of rounds you think the fight will last.

  • Will the fight go the distance? Predict whether or not the fight will go to the judges’ scorecards.

  • Winning method - Bet on which fighter you think will win, and the method of victory. For example, a TKO/KO, submission or the fight goes to decision.

  • Winning method (double chance) - Pick two possible outcomes, and if either lands, you’ll win. For example, you can bet on Max Holloway to win by KO or points.

  • Props - Prop bets let you bet on specific fight stats, such as total strikes landed.

  • Parlays and multibets - Add multiple bets to your bet slip to create a UFC parlay. Some fights also offer same-fight parlays and multis markets, which allow you to combine multiple bets from the same fight.

  • Live betting - UFC live betting is also available, with live odds that are updated in real time as the fighters exchange strikes and attempt to control their opponent.

  • Outright bets - Some outright betting markets, also known as futures, are also available, letting you bet on the future champions of each division.

How to read an MMA matchup before you bet

Before betting on UFC fights at Stake, you should carefully consider the matchup and the chances of each fighter. Follow these tips for success:

  • Consider the style of each fighter - Styles make fights in MMA, with some fighters favouring takedowns and grappling while others are predominantly striking specialists. Each style has its own strengths and weaknesses. Watch videos of each fighter and consider how well their styles will match up.

  • Pay close attention to fighter records - Check the record of each fighter, including their most recent performances and the time they were last in the octagon. Make sure you’re also focusing on the strength of opponents. A fighter with an undefeated record might look impressive, but it depends on which fighters they’ve beaten. Look out for long periods away from fighting or recent KO losses.

  • Factor in the weight cut and possible injuries - Before the fight, each fighter has to weigh in. In most cases, fighters cut weight in fight week, shedding water to gain a size advantage in the cage. Significant or badly managed weight cuts can be draining, leading to poor performances. You should also be on the lookout for possible injuries which could affect the result.

  • Avoid the hype around fan favourites - Fans often make emotional betting decisions about their favourite fighters, but it’s important to be as impartial as possible. Don’t just follow the hype; look at the stats when making your bets.

  • Follow our picks and predictions - Before every major UFC event, we publish our analysis and predictions of all the fights. Check out the UFC picks blog to see the latest upcoming picks.
